Liberty and Virtue

A person who experiences same sex attraction and who endeavors to live chastely in accordance with his religious beliefs keeps an eye out for examples of gay activists' (1) showing intolerance and hatred of traditional religious and moral beliefs and believers, (2) attempting to deny freedom of speech, assembly and religion to others, and (3) trying to cause the government to impose liberal views on sexual morality on society. Other stuff of interest to blogger may also occasionally be posted.

Gay activists do not speak for all those who experience same sex attraction!

Not all those with SSA reject traditional sexual morality!

Not all those with SSA support promiscuity!

Not all those with SSA believe the gay activist ideology of “gay pride”!

Not all those with SSA believe in making their sex drive their primary public identity!

Not all those with SSA support public indecency in “gay pride” parades!

Not all those with SSA support government promotion of homosexual activity!

Not all those with SSA support same sex marriage!

Not all those with SSA support biased teaching in public schools on homosexual matters!

Not all those with SSA demonize traditional religious believers!

Not all those with SSA wish to deny basic freedoms of speech, religion and association to those who disagree with the gay activists’ ideology and agenda!

Christian charity for persons does not require affirmation of sinful or immoral activity!

Andrew Sullivan on the Tim Russert Show

Andrew Sullivan appeared on the Tim Russert Show on CNBC on September 25, 2004, and had, among other things, the following to say:

And I also believe that that kind of fundamentalism and zeal, in which you think your truth is so important you should kill another person to save his soul, is as dangerous in this country as it is anywhere else. It's not gotten to the same lengths, but I see the same glint in the eye of someone like Jimmy Swaggart and Pat Robertson, and some of the forces that this president is riding to victory on, and I worry. I do not want this to become a war between fundamentalist Christianity and fundamentalist Islam. It is a war between fundamentalist religion and liberal democracy, and I say that as a believing Catholic.

First, I question whether Sullivan truly is a "believing Catholic", since according to his public pronouncements would appear not to believe what the Church teaches and has always taught since the time of the Apostles, i.e., that homosexual activity is sinful, and that those with same sex attraction are called to chastity (See the Catechism of the Catholic Church on homosexuality here -- note in particular paragraphs 2357 to 2359).

Second, Sullivan is trying to smear traditional Christian believers as somehow the near moral equivalent of violent Islamist terrorists and non-supporters of liberal democracy. This charge is defamatory. I challenge Sullivan to name one prominent Christian in contemporary America who preaches the morality and necessity of violent offensive jihad or terrorist acts against non-believers or of using violence to "save" someone's "soul" or impose his or her religious beliefs on others. Christians in this country aren't trying to use the government to "impose" their views on others. They just want to be free to hold, preach and practice their own beliefs. One might counter, "what about abortion?" The answer on that score is that contrary to what Senator Kerry would have us believe, abortion is a moral, not a purely religious issue, as it impacts on rights of human beings, i.e., the right to life of the fetus in the womb. Moreover, prior to the creation of a constitutional right to abortion by the Supreme Court, the United States was as much of a "liberal democracy" as it is today.

I would wager Sullivan almost any amount that the vast majority of traditional Christian believers in this country would, if polled, support our liberal democracy and Constitution. It is gay activists like Andrew Sullivan and their liberal supporters who want to subvert freedom of speech, religion, association, who want to use the government to impose their liberal views on sexual morality on society through judicially-imposed civil "same sex marriage," through teaching in public schools that homosexual behavior is morally acceptable and laudable, through promotion of "hate speech" criminal legislation akin to that in place in Canada, Sweden and other countries, etc. It is gay activists like Andrew Sullivan and their liberal supporters who are spreading anti-Christian bigotry through their constant slander and demonization of traditional Christian believers. Andrew Sullivan and other gay activists must be publicly called to account for their hatemongering.
